Slowdown impacts many area businesses

Weakness in the economy has long been evident to Robert A. Mecca, a life-planning consultant in Mount Prospect who said the economic slowdown has taken its toll on his clients.

The financial planner said his customers have been hit by greater numbers of corporate restructurings, jobs moving overseas and benefit changes.

"I've been predicting a slowdown since 2007," Mecca said.

CME Group continues transition, impresses brokers

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade have come one step closer to fully merging their operations by putting the CBOT’s agriculture and equity index products on the CME Globex electronic platform.

So far the transition seems to be going smoothly, despite mounting trade volumes in recent years.

“Any electronic platform is going to have issues from time to time,” said Dan O’Neil, executive vice-president of futures at Chicago-based optionsXpress Inc. “But by and large, I think the CME has been doing this right. We’ve not had any terrible situations or painful experiences.”

Walgreens sees stock drop as an aberration

After its shares dropped Wednesday to a 52-week low on the day of its annual shareholders meeting in Chicago, Walgreen Co. dusted itself off and its stock price rebounded more than 2 percent Thursday.

Expressing confidence to the 2,000-plus shareholders at the meeting about the company's future, CEO Jeffrey Rain said one reason for optimism is the company's success in acquiring hard-to-find pharmacists by luring them from other stores, along with their customer lists.

Some analysts feel the recent drop in stock price was overblown and that it has become undervalued.

"I think it was an aberration," said Andrew Wolf, an analyst with BB&T Capital Markets in Richmond, Va.
